Black Newspapers and America`s War for Democracy, 1914-1920
During World War I, the publishers of America`s crusading black newspapers faced a difficult dilemma. Would it be better to advance the interests of African Americans by affirming their patriotism black us president and offering support of President Wilson`s war for democracy in Europe, or should they demand that the government take concrete steps to stop the lynching, segregation, black us president and disfranchisement of blacks at home as a condition of their participation in the war? This study of their efforts to resolve that dilemma offers important insights into the nature of black protest, race relations, black us president and the role of the press in a republican system. William Jordan shows that before, during, black us president and after the war, the black press engaged in a delicate black us president and dangerous dance with the federal government black us president and white America--at times making demands or holding firm, sometimes pledging loyalty, occasionally giving in. But although others have argued that the black press compromised too much, Jordan demonstrates that, given the circumstances, its strategic combination of protest black us president and accommodation was remarkably effective. While resisting persistent threats of censorship, the black press consistently worked at educating America about the need for racial justice. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Black Politics in New Deal Atlanta

Black Politics in New Deal Atlanta
When Franklin Roosevelt was elected president in 1932, Atlanta had the South's largest population of college-educated African Americans. The dictates of Jim Crow meant that these men black us president and women were almost entirely excluded from public life, but as Karen Ferguson demonstrates, Roosevelt's New Deal opened unprecedented opportunities for black Atlantans struggling to achieve full citizenship.Black reformers, often working within federal agencies as social workers black us president and administrators, saw the inclusion of African Americans in New Deal social welfare programs as a chance to prepare black Atlantans to take their rightful place in the political black us president and social mainstream. They also worked to build a constituency they could mobilize for civil rights, in the process facilitating a shift from elite reform to the mass mobilization that marked the postwar black freedom struggle.Although these reformers' efforts were an essential prelude to civil rights activism, Ferguson argues that they also had lasting negative repercussions, embedded as they were in the politics of respectability. By attempting to impose bourgeois behavioral standards on the black community, elite reformers stratified it into those they determined deserving to participate in federal social welfare programs black us president and those they consigned to remain at the margins of civic life.
